Holy Diver, released in 1983, is the debut studio album by the American heavy metal band Dio. After finishing his first tenure in Black Sabbath, vocalist Ronnie James Dio put together his own band and brought along drummer Vinny Appice from his previous band. Completing the roster were bassist Jimmy Bain, Dio's former band mate in Rainbow, and young guitarist Vivian Campbell from the NWOBHM band Sweet Savage. The album received acclaim from the music press and remains the band's most successful release.
The cover of the album features the band's mascot, Murray, spinning chains around waves, with a figure wearing a priest or minister's collar floating in chains. Dio made it clear that appearances can be deceiving, suggesting that it could just as easily be a priest killing a devil, and encouraging people not to "judge a book by its cover."
